In December 2019, our alliance started a European-wide campaign in which we called on Subway, the largest fast food chain in the world, to increase its animal welfare standards for chickens raised for meat, so-called broiler chickens. In spring of this year, due to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and the associated restrictions for the food service industry, we decided to pause our campaign until the situation returned to normal. During that time, we tried our best to reach an agreement with the European management of the fast food restaurant, but this has unfortunately been unsuccessful.

Considering that the food service industry has been able to resume its operations in large parts of Europe and that Subway has a well-established delivery service, we have now decided to relaunch the campaign.

We are organizing an Europe-wide online protest week on various social media platforms from July 22 - 29.

However, we will not be targeting restaurant owners directly this time but instead the European offices of the sandwich giant. Therefore, our alliance will not organize any protests in front of Subway stores for the time being.

Why we are protesting

We are protesting against Subway because every day the stores associated with this chain sell meat from chickens that have lived and died under excruciating conditions.

European laws do not protect the animals sufficiently, causing them to suffer from health issues due to overbreeding and close confinement in filthy conditions. Chickens destined for Subway are also subjected to stressful stunning procedures prior to slaughter, which cannot guarantee a painless death.

In addition, it has recently again become brutally clear that cheap, cruel meat production also comes at a high cost for our health, the climate and our environment. This makes it ever more important that companies as large and influential as Subway take responsibility now and prioritize the issue of animal welfare.

The European Chicken Commitment is a step in the right direction. It aims to alleviate the problems mentioned above as much as possible, whilst aiming to keep the extra costs that higher animal welfare standards entail manageable for companies. More than 300 companies worldwide have already committed to increasing their animal welfare standards according to the requirements of the European Chicken Commitment. Subway USA and Canada already made the commitment back in 2017.

This is why we are calling on Subway to no longer resist practicable changes and finally commit to establishing higher animal welfare standards in Europe as well.
